This ‘editor’s letter’ is 99% of the time the last thing that is written before it comes to ‘closing’ the magazine and hitting the print button. However, this month it isn’t, I’m writing it 96hrs before press day. I’ll explain… To include what can only be described as the biggest carp fishing competition of the decade – The Champion of Champions match – an event whereby the ten winners from the last ten years of the British Carp Angling Champions meet for a head-to-head battle to crown one of them the ultimate champion, it meant moving the deadline forward by 24hrs. This ‘good will’ from the printers means I’ll be out following the event when really I should be here tapping this out. As a result, there are no teasers to who won and how they did, so all I can do is point you in the direction of page 38.
Unfortunately (read: fortunately for you), my job isn’t made any easier still, as picking out the month’s key features is almost near on impossible: Below The Surface, Gaz Fareham, Nigel Sharp, Pete Castle, Tank Tests, Martin Locke… See what I mean? Take our cover star, ESP’s head designer, Dave Ellyatt. In his Rotary Letter (P67) contribution he reveals a couple of brilliant new bait edges and how pre-baiting with boiled food isn’t just restricted to the consultants and the rich; it’s something we will all benefit from. And then you’ve got Laney’s Column (P60) – a month were he reveals the lengths and dedication he’ll go to when it comes to catching big fish. (We’ve even included a Horrific ‘Laney’ Special! which makes for eye-watering reading.)
And if you still want more, you’ll find Martin Locke in Explainer (P12), your angling woes answered in Technical Know-How (P17), Pete Castle’s Outside The Box (P48) and Pete Regan adding an entertaining tone to the issue on page 93.
To conclude: I’m handing over to Steve Briggs on page 10 to give you the full edition rundown… Enjoy the issue.
