3 steps to becoming a better angler

The three things that Pete Castle thinks can make you a better angler

1. Weather

Having a detailed understanding of the weather has made me a better angler. The weather is one of the key elements that dictate a carp’s mood, feeding habits and location, and understand the changing weather patterns will often keep you one step ahead of the fish (and other anglers). Staying one step ahead of the fish can be the key to success whilst others are chasing where they’ve been.

A stunning long common: the result of finding them

2. Location

Being close to fish has made me a better angler. I’ve always had the ability to find fish. I’d rather not have the rods out and be walking the banks than sit behind static rods starring into the abyss. Take a camera and go off and ‘tune in’ to the surrounding landscape. The insects flying about or the warmth of the sun might give you the clues you’re looking for. Switch off the smart phone (for a while) and trust your gut instincts – we are animals too!

I always keep mobile

3. Mobility

Don’t be afraid to move! If you see fish in other places then move before someone else does. ‘Early bird’ and all that jazz. My drive and desire to catch has made me a better angler. Any fool can lay in a bivvy asleep, but you have to have a bit more about you to move in a cold rainstorm. Stay with the fish if you want to catch consistently!
