A proper big pit reel at a super sensible price

It looks great, it holds a mile of line and it’s yours for under £100.00. Say hi to Daiwa’s new big pit Emcast

In 1990, Daiwa unleashed the little-talked-about-today GS9000 Millionmax on the world and the big pit reel was born. Reels would never be the same again. The SS3000 followed, as did the Tournament 5000T, Infinity-X (Daiwa’s first big pit reel to feature their Bite ‘n’ Run system) and in most recent years the Basia and its ever-growing family of siblings, and whilst the retail prices kept going up on these Audi R8 equivalent reels, there was good news as much of the newfound tech started to find its way down to the cheaper end of the market – just like it does in the car manufacturing industry.

Not only is the Emcast exceptionally well priced, it looks stunning too

The latest offering to receive such a privilege upgrade is Daiwa’s brand-new Emcast. Here’s a reel that’s beautiful, ballsy, techy, hardworking and affordable.

Although ‘Emcast’ is already in existence, the current model is only available as a compact ‘BR’ (Daiwa’s free-spool system) version, so the arrival of this big pit version is most welcome. Due to its spool size and 85cm crank power, it means the Emcast of 2015 can handle all situations, from close in margin work to extreme-range fishing.

And as we pointed out at the start, this £99.99 reel (which includes a full spec spare spool) comes with a lot of top end tech you’d find on a Basia. AirBail and Twistbuster to keep your line in tiptop condition? It’s got it. Soft Grip T-Shape handle? It’s there. Infinite Anti-Reverse? They’ve bolted it on.

Pound-for-pound, looks-for-looks, performance-for-performance, the new Emcast has properly smashed it.

Emcast Spod & Mark

Enjoy power and beauty at a very competitive price

When it comes to producing a top-end spod/marker reel, the key isn’t cosmetics, it’s power. Power is king. The more power it’s got, the less work you have to do. And this new addition which is based around the reel to your left features a higher crank rate which will deliver a retrieval of 102cm on a full spool. And where it gets even better is the sub 5 ratio of 4.9:1 – and this in English means you get a high power conversion when making retrievals of large Spombs/spods and markers with heavy leads a lot easier on the arms.

Inside the carcass, you’ll find five stainless steel ball bearings, Infinite Anti-Reverse and a graphite rotor, whilst the outside almost looks identical to its slightly less powerful brothers. The body’s made from the same lightweight graphite (a mere 657g) so it’s comfortable to hold during prolonged baiting up sessions; and it also features that same classy looking machine cut aluminium handle, along with AirBail, Twistbuster and a spring-loaded line clip.

And as if all these features weren’t bad enough for Daiwa’s competition, to rub salt into the wounds, they’re selling the Emcast Spod’N’Mark reel for just £99.99 (and it comes with a full spec matching spare spool)!
