Avid Trap Line

Half time! With summer behind us, it’s time for your six-month re-spool, but this time you’ll get change from a tenner…

We’re just as guilty as you are. For the past few years, all CARPology has concentrated on (and you we’re guessing) is the vast array out groundbreaking products coming out of the Avid camp and we’ve totally overlooked one part of their business. One very big part that is. Whilst we’ve been obsessing over their bivvies, beds, beanies and bobbins, we’ve completely forgotten about their end tackle and main line collections. Trap Line, the brand’s all-round monofilament, isn’t just tough yet soft, supple but heavy, it’s also pretty damn cheap: it normally retails for £18.99 but head down to any Avid stockists right now and you’ll discover it’s selling for just £9.99…

The big questions

Errrrr, I’m sorry, how much?!
Yep, that’s not a misprint. A bulk spool, which comes in four breaking strains, will see you get change from a tenner.

Wow, thanks Avid! But what’s the line actually like?
Personality-wise, it’s a great all-round monofilament but one which has been designed with strength in mind. Although it’s extremely tough and hardwearing, the line is still super soft and supple and that makes for a very user-friendly mono when it comes to casting. Plus, as soon as the line is cast out, it sinks quickly and becomes virtually invisible on the bottom thanks to its darkish brown pantone.

As it’s so tough, does that mean it’s mega thick?
No, not at all. It actually boasts low diameters for such high breaking strains. 10lb (0.30), 12lb (0.32), 15 (0.35) and 18lb (0.40mm). And although rigorously tested by Team Avid for 12-months prior to launching, the know-how and experience this line represents runs into decades of experience so use it with total trust.

How does it spool up?
As with any line, a bit of prep work beforehand goes a long way. Prior to spooling, soak the 1/4lb spool in water overnight. It will soften the mono hugely, helping to bed it down when being loaded. For more tips, just check out our ‘How To’ panel to your right...
