5 steps to success this October

Brad Greening reveals five steps to put you on the right track for an alarm screaming month

Step 1

Location: “As autumn approaches and the weed starts to die down, the fish tend to hold up in other safe areas, such as snags, margins and islands so it’s always worth looking for visible features which offer shelter or areas which offer the fish a ‘safe zone’.”

Step 2

“With the autumn leaves beginning to fall from the trees, the bottom in the margins and near to islands will be littered in leaves, dead weed and twigs etc. Rigs that incorporate the use of a pop-up or a solid PVA bag will give you a better presentation when fishing over debris like this, leading to more bites!”

Step 3

“My favourite style of angling is with boilie baits with my current favourites being Mainline Cell and Hybrid. Due to Hybrid's high quality ingredients and the fact it’s easily digestible, it works well all year round, giving masses of confidence. So use a good quality bait you have confidence in!”

Step 4

“Depending on the lake and the stock, I will happily use large quantities as I would in summer. Through autumn the water is still fairly warm and in my opinion the fish are still often actively seeking large quantities of bait before the real harsh cold weather sets in and their metabolism slows down.”

Step 5

“Be mobile: Through autumn, the lakes can be a lot less busy than they are in summer, giving you more opportunity to move swims if you see the fish held up elsewhere. Don’t waste these opportunities by being lazy as they can pay off big time - effort equals reward!”
