Back to basics: The spod

Dave Levy explains how you can get more out of your spod

Another classic carp angler’s baiting tool. This is probably the most versatile tool for bait application as it does cater for everything and will work in all situations. However, the spod can be a little noisy and does take a little while to deposit large amounts of bait.

Spodding with braided main line is a big help

Specialist kit

I mentioned earlier that the spod is great for baiting at long distances and in some cases anglers are able to use a spod at up to around 150yds, something no other baiting tool can do. This is the result of using the right tackle and if you want to achieve the best results from your spodding I would advise that you kit yourself out with a dedicated spod rod, a spod reel and a braided main line.

The Skywinder Spod is perfect for boilies, a great way of avoiding the seagulls

Combat the gulls

Nowadays seagulls are becoming more and more of a problem, their numbers are increasing and they are now fully aware of what a catapult or throwing stick is for. On some venues it is quite simply impossible to get a bait to reach the bottom. A spod is the solution and will allow you to get plenty of bait out there without a problem – where gulls are present a spod will prevail.

Clip-up

The spod is ideal for particle or ‘bit fishing’ as it enables you to get the distance and keep things tight. With a little practice and the use of a line clip on your spod reel you will be able to hit the same spot every time, ensuring a concentrated patch of particle is achieved.

Don't overload

Overfilling is just as much of a problem with a spod as it is with a catapult. If you put too much bait into one of your spods it will cause the spod to lose balance during flight and in turn you will lose accuracy.

Dip to stop spill

As far as the actual spod itself goes, I prefer to use either a Skywinder or Skyraider. The Skyraider being my favourite for particle fishing due to the holes which allow the particle to leave the spod quicker. The Skywinder I find great for boilie fishing and once I’ve dipped it in the water for a second the baits will not spill from the spod.
