Five steps to success this October

Step 1

“October weather can be very changeable, and so my tactics follow suit. If the conditions are ‘carpy’ i.e. low pressure, mild, windy, then I would opt for a boilie approach. However, if there is a more wintery feel with perhaps still, frosty mornings, then maggots would be my choice.”

Step 2

“A good quality boilie is always a must, KG1 has served me very well in years gone by. However, I also like to use S-core. I have caught well on it throughout out the spring and summer and I see no need to change it for the autumn.”

Step 3

“The carp around this time can really be up for a big feed, but I will not go mad at the start of a session, 50-100 baits per rod is more than enough to gauge the fish’s reaction. If bites come quickly, then I will not hold back in giving them a good few kilos.”

Step 4

“On the more pressured venues that I have fished, if you can be the first to get on the maggots as the temperatures start to drop, you can really reap he benefits. After the first frosts I will be looking to get on them and like with the boilies I will not go mad, starting off spodding out about four pints.”

Step 5

“I won’t use maggots on the hair, opting for a piece of plastic corn or a Richworth Tutti pop-up. There still may be a few silver fish about so this ensures I always have a bait on and will always be in with a chance of a bite.”
