Is bait colour important?

Fed up of listening with bleeding ears to the lake bore who knows absolutely everything and everything?

The myth

‘Some people feel that bait colour is not important. Quite how this can be amazes me and whilst I accept that foodbaits work, to dismiss colours is crazy.’

The reality

“Nothing will convince me otherwise that carp in clear waters rely very heavily on sight to find food, and carp in coloured waters rely more on scent and then see sight as a secondary sense. There’s all sorts of discussions about whether carp see in infra red, ultra violet, shades of grey, but what we can absolutely categorically state is that different coloured baits work in different circumstances. Take yellow as a prime example. People think yellow is a hi-vis bait when in reality it is actually quite camouflaged underwater unless fished over dark silt. The water is usually green in our lakes, weed is green and the undersides are yellow. Silt, especially in the Cotswolds area is yellow, so a yellow bait matches its surroundings and becomes disguised. Red, which has been reported as being invisible underwater (not true in shallow lakes) is actually very visible indeed, but if you want a real stand-out bait, try pink.”
