Should you use nuts in winter?
I am due to start fishing a water that allows the use of nuts . (1) Can you give me any pointers in the safe use/preparation of this bait and (2), what nuts are great in winter? Ian Dobson
Tony Welch says: “First off, I would ask the question: why do you want to use nuts going in winter? If it’s just because the lake rules allow nuts to be used then for me personally that’s not really a good enough reason. My advice is going into the colder months stick with a proven boilie like the Cell, which is also more nutritional for the fish. If you are adamant that the nut route is what you want to do, then I’d have to recommend peanuts. I’ve used them occasionally in previous years during the colder months and they have scored well. A friend of mine uses tigers all year around and is successful, but he also baits up with boilies as well as a single pouchful of tigers.
“Try and buy peanuts prepared from an established company like Kent Particles. If you are going to prepare them yourself purchase human grade, soak for 18hrs and simmer for 25 minutes. Oh, and use sparingly! You could also consider purchasing prepared crushed peanuts and add the Mainline Condensed Coconut Milk Syrup (use as much as you want it can’t be overloaded) to add some real attraction to your swim!
“Rig wise, I’d recommend using two peanuts fished tight to the hook on a short hooklength (four- to six-inches) of Trickster Heavy incorporating a Covert size 10 Continental Mugga hook.”
