Can they see you on the bank?

Fed up of listening with bleeding ears to the lake bore who knows absolutely everything and everything?

The myth

‘Carp have the best eyesight in the world and can see your every move. If you’re not leopard-crawling up to the water’s edge, dragging your six pack along the dirt, then you have no chance at all.’

The reality

“Science tells us that carp have a massive range of vision because of their eyes being at the side of their heads rather than at the front. This is because they are prey rather than hunters so they need to be aware of what’s going on around them. Interestingly, it is this reason that they are absolutely useless at picking stuff up, especially from off the surface. They have difficulty judging distance so regularly when you see carp missing a Mixer or not quite getting a bait in their mouth, it’s not because they are clever and purposefully “doing you”; it’s because they are stupid and have missed! “Anyway, we’re also told that they can see out of water very well but the reality of it is they can’t do that either. The water has to be crystal clear, the fish has to be close to the surface, and also there has to be very little ripple on the water for perfect vision. Also, the fish has to be close in. Anything further than about 45-degrees out from the top of your head means that unless it is flat calm, perfectly clear and the fish is high up in the water will it see you, if at all, and then very likely on the very edge of their peripheral vision.”
