We take a look at taste modifiers
Sweetening agents can be placed into two categories. (1) Naturally derived materials, for example cane sugar, fructose (fruit sugars), lactose (milk sugars), high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), molasses and thaumatin to name but a few, the latter being somewhat in a league of its own. And (2) synthetic sweetening agents such as saccharin, otherwise known as benzoic sulfamine. These tend to have properties which will leave a bitter aftertaste and aren’t as smooth as natural sweeteners.
That’s the science bit done – here’s how to cash-in on their carp-attracting properties…
1 Soak your tiger nut hookbaits in Talin. It will not only act as a natural preservative but will hugely improve the appeal of the nut.
2 One of the best uses for any of these products has to be in the inclusion with any particle bait; there can be no doubt they do give the bait the edge. Look at each product individually, but as a generalisation, use between 2 and 6ml per kilo.
3 Of course all of these products will gel well in spod mixes, groundbaits and Stick mixes, but a real edge is with liquidised bread. Whether it is the solubility in combination with the fluffy bread carpet and cloud we don’t know, but we won’t use bread without one of them in it!
4 Zig foam, plastic baits, feeder foam and gel capsules: soak them or fill them, leave them in it neat and you will have the definitive edge. Or, if you want two little effective combos then here they are: winter: Solar’s E12 with Liquid Sweetener 50:50 and summer: Nashbait’s Sweetcorn Extract with 15ml sweetener to a pot.
5 When it comes to using any of these products in your boiled baits, keep to the recommend levels from each supplier. It’s best to start off with a one-egg mix until you achieve a taste profile that you like and then you can start to roll it en masse.
6 If you want to give your singles a quick dip before casting out then just do that, or why not overspray the pellets you are putting out in the PVA bag?
