Has health and safety gone mad on fisheries?
Big opinions by key anglers on major events happening within carp fishing - Has health and safety gone mad on fisheries, i.e. trees being felled etc?
Ben Gratwicke (Digger-lakes owner)
H&S at some fisheries I should imagine has gone to new levels especially where numbers of people are employed, most fisheries have few if any staff and a lot of voluntary workers who would not fit with the requirements. If at Diggerlakes we have a netting team from Sparsholt down then the lecturer in charge needs to make sure the RAMS (Risk assessments and method statements) are in place. It’s all about covering yourself so you don’t end up in serious trouble for an accident or worse, I am currently managing a warehouse refurbishment and H&S is a big day to day thing and I hope fisheries never get to this point.

“It depends which way that you look at this one. Whilst on the one hand having a fishery that has to abide by council rules in regard to health and safety is a very good thing, as it makes your surroundings, swims, safety and security spot-on, but on the other, sometime’s there’s just so much red tape and money that the fisheries will have to make savings somewhere else like ticket prices and stock levels to name a few. It seems that running a successful legit fishery will only be for the rich in years to come, which, like all of you reading this, I hope isn’t the case.”
