How to handle a multiple take

This is how Nigel Sharp's mental checklist looks...

“Unfortunately multiple takes is not something that happens too often on the waters I fish but it does happen. For me, the biggest factor is being able to get the rod out again quickly after landing a fish to maximise on any potential feeding spells. I guess it’s the same as on the more prolific waters where it all comes down to preparation, spare rigs, leads and hookbaits – the only thing is personally I will only have a couple of spares but on some of the ‘carp match’ venues they can have hundreds!

“I have tailored my rigs so each component can be changed quickly and easily. It is a mental checklist that I run through in my head each time I cast out. Is the hook still sharp? Is the leader damaged? Has the wind changed so I have to change the lead size? If anything is less than perfect it is quickly changed and the preparation you have put in previously really comes into play. You never want to be in a situation where you are casting out a less-than-perfect rig because you ‘can’t be bothered’ to tie another up.”

Sharp Edge #1

“For as long as I can remember I’ve tied my pop-ups on, which can be a bit fiddly in the pouring rain in the middle of the night. I have had a few people mention about the ‘bore ring’ and since trying them I haven’t looked back. It’s so much quicker and I am now 100% confident in them!”

Sharp Edge #2

“Although I don’t have a rig board as such, I like to keep a few spare stiff rigs and boom sections ready to go at a moment’s notice. I keep them in a stiff tube that prevents them from getting kinked or damaged – and as soon as one gets used I will tie a replacement so I am never rushing to tie one after a fish.”

Sharp Edge #3

“I love the loop-to-loop method for my leadcore leaders. I now splice a loop at either end so I can change both the lead or the whole leader without breaking everything down; again it’s all about speed and ease of use – I haven’t used a needle knot since!”
