Learn when to recast

Recasting at the wrong time can most definitely cost you. Sometimes it’s not your fault, for example if another angler casts at the wrong time, but there are things you can do to ensure you don’t ruin it for yourself.

1. Feeding times

You need to work out the feeding times and work around those. If you’re new to a venue then look out for the obvious ones, such as first light and just on dusk.

2. Leave the rods

The other key factor to consider is when you’re fishing two or three rods to the same area. It’s sometimes a hard one to call, but if you get a bite and there’s evidence of fish still feeding, then it might be worth NOT recasting straightaway.

3. Work it out

Or try this method thanks to carp legend, Shaun Harrison. “Draw a circle, then divide that circle up. Draw a cross on it so the top is at 00:00 hours, the right is at 06:00 hours, the bottom at 12:00 and the left at 18:00. Next draw a diagonal cross so that you now have 03:00, 09:00, 15:00 and 21:00 hours added. Now you have to simply add any fish hooked or landed into the correct section; you won’t believe how glaringly obvious it becomes when you are best to re-bait and re-cast.”
