When is the best time to recast?

Are there any golden rules as to when you should have a recast? Is there a set time you should bait up and recast prior to a known feeding time too? Tim Smith, via e-mail

Pete Kingsbury says: “Firstly, I think it’s useful to find out if there is a specific bite time on the water you are fishing – as a general rule this is often early morning between 4am and 11am, but on some waters you may find they fish better at night. It all depends how well stocked the venue is. After all, the more carp that are in the lake the more chance of a bite anytime day or night and there will be swims on the lake when you can get a take when it’s not the so-called bite time.
“As for recasting, I would suggest that you start resetting your traps at about 11.30am, with the aim of getting all the rods done and baited up by 4pm so your swim has plenty of time to settle. If there are any anglers close-by, you can see when they are recasting and baiting up and get your baiting done around the same time to minimise disturbance.

“Of course if you have got carp jumping or fizzing in your swim it is always worth leaving your rods out for longer and hopefully you will catch a carp. Then you will have to recast!”
