Full Whack Shocker! | Pole Position

So it would appear that you really can have it all when it comes to a cover-all-eventualities lead system…

Can a lead system exist that really offers the best of everything: full weight on the lead, regardless of which direction the fish moves off—and, a system that provides bite indication twice as fast as any other lead arrangement? Preposterous. Pole Position says otherwise, as they’ve proved with their new Central Shocker System.

THE BIG FIVE TAKEAWAYS
1. Central pickup
Thanks to the shape of the lead and positioning of the semi-hard insert and special QC Shocker Swivel, it means the carp—regardless of which direction it moves away—will always be hitting the bulk of the weight once they pick up and straighten your rig. This effectively increases the bolt effect and helps drive the hook home, converting more half-chances into full-blown runs. Now that all sounds brilliant, but there’s another—even better—twist…

2. Doubling up
It blows our mind—as it did CARPology’s Joe Wooltorton, who’s made a video on our YouTube channel about this lead system—but somehow, once the semi-fixed half-barrel swivel is released from the lead, for every length of line that’s pulled through the lead, it’s double that length at the rod end. Confused?! So, for example, if you pull a foot of line from the hook end, two feet of line are pulled from the rod side. It’s not only insanely clever, but it gives you twice as much bite indication.

3. What comes in the pack?
The system comes supplied on a reusable EVA block, to which the leader is wrapped around and held with a matching-coloured pin. Along with the lead and leader, there’s a QC Shocker Swivel and a size 8 swivel. The lead style on this system is a ‘Grippa’, but it’s available with a more traditional flat pear inline design. It’s also worth pointing out the weight is made from an environment friendly, non-toxic material.

4 How does it cast?
If you have fears this would cast like a bag of nails, discard them. With the hooklink exiting halfway down the lead, it’s held high above the main line (the same effect you get with anti-tangle sleeves with a lead clip), so there’s very little chance of it tangling. And the weight-forward design means it casts straight and true.

5. What’s the cost?
At £7.99 a system, it’s not cheap, but it does give you an edge over the fish—and, more importantly, other anglers on the lake. The weight is available in two colours: Silt and Weed, and comes in five sizes: 3, 3.5, 4, 4.3 and 5oz. There is also a 6oz option in the other style of weight.
