The myth
‘We all have ideas how our rigs look on the deck but, despite the very best endeavours of rig drawings in mags, they rarely look like we think they do.’
The reality
“We spend ages balancing our rigs in the edge, making them look nice and straightening them out for a perfect presentation before happily launching them to the horizon, and worse still, not hitting the clip. If you only take one thing from my features, please let it be this one: hit the clip when you cast out. If you don’t, there will be a very good chance that your rig is tangled on the deck. I’ve done the test too many times for it not to be a reality. Unless you are using a bag or a Chod, the rig will tangle as it hits the water, whether the material is stiff or supple, and whether you have tubing on or not. By hitting the clip you are straightening out the rig, and you also get the added benefit of knowing what you are fishing over as you have felt the lead down. I won’t say that you will not catch if you don’t hit the clip, but I will definitely say that you will catch more if you do.”
