I’d always dreamt of owning an Aqua Pioneer as a teenager, many years ago. They were so iconic in their design, and as an impressionable young angler, I just couldn’t resist!

Eventually, some 12 years ago, I finally acquired one. I think at the time, it was a cheaper Trakker-Pioneer collaboration, one which they had done alongside Danson Angling. This nylon version was my pride and joy. I was chuffed to see that iconic head piece set up in the swim. This bivvy was quick to erect and was also light. It came with a zip-in front, groundsheet and mozzi mesh. It was everything you could want and it has never let me down—my father still uses it today. I’ve even given it a custom spray-paint job to make it look even more cult.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve moved on to the more recent Aqua Pioneer, and it is one special bit of kit. The material is thick, and a beautiful shade of dark green. One thing I’ve really noticed is just how dark it remains inside on those early summer mornings, especially if the front is attached, and this makes for a comfortable night’s sleep. The only thing I would love to see, is for the weight to be reduced, without sacrificing build quality. It was apparent that Aqua had spent time getting this much-awaited re-released bivvy right, and it is incredibly strong, but it is so hefty compared to its Tempest equivalents, or indeed the old, ultralight model.

Overall, I can’t see myself changing from the Pioneer. It’s a strong reliable shelter that can take a battering from the wind, rain and an unforgiving angler’s abuse. It’s easy to put up and take down quickly, and it won’t let you down.

Perhaps if Aqua do decide to produce a second version, it could just be a little lighter!
