Make this September the best yet!

Five steps to put you on the right track for an alarm screaming month from Lewis Read

Step 1

“Identify key feeding zones and concentrate your baiting in areas that the carp actually feed in. Personally, I think that the closer in and more tucked away the better as everything becomes so much easier. Lets face it, spodding at 100yds is never going to be easy or fun! Even with specialist rods, reels, braid and spods it’s labour.”

Step 2

“Try and time your visits to the lake so that you can do it with as few eyes on you as possible – there may be either avian or angler’s. Both are likely to ruin your planning if you’re caught in the act. It’s not being sneaky as such, there is nothing wrong with reaping the benefits of your own efforts!”

Step 3

“Try to be regular: rather than sticking in a load of bait once a week (when a lot will be wastage thanks to feathered vermin) I prefer to bait up little and often so that the fish become accustomed to finding fresh bait on a regular basis. If you’re using decent bait it makes sense to keep them going in nice and fresh. Don’t get me wrong, mass baiting can work, but I personally don’t think that it is the most efficient method.”

Step 4

“Bait heavily during decent feeding conditions, but consider holding back on the quantities when conditions are not so conducive to the carp eating the banquet you lay out in front of them. Bait doesn’t come cheap does it, so why waste it or reduce your chances of catching with too much!”

Step 5

“Don’t give in after a short period of time. A genuinely good quality boilie will work better and better the longer you apply it and don’t restrict baiting to a single spot. Carp are often highly mobile and if they get used to feeding on your bait in different places they are more likely to become confident and make a mistake when it comes to the hookbait.”
