Advanta Discovery CCX Low Rider

Dripping with old-school cool, this light and low brolly looks the business in DPM camo

Angling Direct’s Advanta range continues to expand, and this latest addition is as rugged and as impressive as they come. The Discovery CCX Low Rider’s DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material) camo evokes the rough, tough days of 1980s carping, but its modern design and materials mean it’s a more than capable shelter. With a weight of just 5.5kg and a £179.99 price tag for the brolly, it should definitely be on the radar of the mobile, short-session angler.

The Big Questions

What’s with that camo pattern, are these brollies from Army Surplus?
It manages to both blend in and stand out, doesn’t it! DPM like this used to be the signature of carp anglers in days gone by, when gear from Army Surplus shops had to be re-purposed, but it’s definitely made a comeback in recent years. These days, a proper old-school camo pattern like this is normally found on products at the top end of the luggage and shelter market, so fair play to AD for rolling it out to the masses.

It’s certainly got a rugged look to it, but can it walk the walk?
The tough 210D nylon has a 10,000mm hydrostatic-head waterproof rating and the brolly is designed with a curved open profile for protection from the elements. There’s also a full-length rain gutter and an inner flat-peak tension bar. The storm sides are extended with fully taped seams, and you get two storm poles thrown in.

If I want more comfort?
There’s a dedicated wrap that creates a porch area and reduces condensation. It’s got a dual-zipped roll-up mozzie window, weighs 2.5kg and boast two Velcro rod straps.

Who’s it aimed at?
Like all brollies, this is predominantly for the shorter-session angler. It’s 135cm tall, 245cm wide and 200cm deep, so it’ll envelope you and all your kit no problem, plus the brolly weighs just 5.5kg. There’s a lightweight groundsheet and proper pegs included, but if you’re really into travelling light you can always leave the former at home and carry just a handful of pegs.
