Head-To-Head A Safe Landing
These two new nets from the Wychwood stable come with clever features and look great poking up in the air from the margin
Wychwood’s current line-up of landing nets—Signature and Solace—arrived a few years back, and were a hit with consumers and critics. Now, the beloved British brand has ushered in two more nets to complete their sub-brands—Riot and Extremis—with the latter featuring a very neat new feature on a landing net. In addition to the natty extras, they both come with great recession-proof price tags.
So what’s the difference between the Riot and Extremis then?
The latter is the flagship model that compliments the existing Extremis range of rods, while the Riot is more keenly priced. Both are available with two different handle types.
Tell me more about the Extremis—what’s it got?
This is a 42-inch landing net with a metal spreader block, lightweight carbon arms and free-flow mesh material. Cleverly, that deep mesh can be clipped out of the way when not in use thanks to a pair of magnets—one in the net and one on the handle to snap it into position. The magnets will part when you scoop a fish into the mesh. It works so, so much better than the traditional method of tucking the mesh into the ‘V’ on the spreader block.
Sounds like a great feature. What else is there?
The Extremis nets are supplied with net floats to keep them from dipping beneath the surface at the crucial moment, and they come supplied
with a drawcord carry bag.
They? Is there more than one?
Yep, you can order the Extremis with a single-piece handle or a two-piece version if space is at a premium (or you regularly net fish from a boat). The handles have a pointed butt cap too, which can be used to drive into the ground for temporary fish retention in the margins (and to give you that ‘Terry Hearn’ look)!
And how about the Riot nets?
Again, these come with single or two-piece pole options with a high-grip shrink-wrap handle. Just like the Extremis models, you get fish-friendly free-flow mesh, with a subtle Wychwood tree logo printed on the front panel, and a net float is supplied as standard.
Anything else I need to know?
The Riots have a moulded plastic spreader block and the arms aren’t carbon, but they are still fully functioning carp nets built to last. You don’t get a carry bag, either, but these are cheaper than the Extremis options.

We think both are very reasonably priced, with the Riot coming in at £64.99 for the single-piece handle option and £69.99 for the two-piece version. The Extremis is £94.99 for the single-piece handle option and £99.99 for the two-piece version.
