It seems odd to imagine a time before carp barrows, even if it is only a couple of decades since household wheelbarrows, shopping trolleys and prams doubled as lakeside transport. Thankfully, we’ve come a long way since then and now the choice of purpose-built barrows is wide and varied. Prologic have gone rugged yet compact with their latest offering, and here’s what we’ve learnt since giving it its maiden voyage around the local lake…
What makes this barrow worthy of the ‘Compact’ name?
Well, relatively speaking, barrows are always going to be one of the bigger items of kit we have to get in and out of the car, but this one does fold down very neatly to fit in smaller cars. Like most barrows, the handle and wheel are removable and the front bracing bar folds down onto the main frame. Prologic have also done away with the side bracing bars to further reduce bulk.
So what will stop my gear sliding off over the sides?
Don’t panic. Just place your bedchair on the frame upside down and fold out the legs to provide barriers at either side. You can then use bungees to strap everything down. If you’ve never used a barrow like this before you might be surprised by just how sturdy it is.
Speaking of sturdy, that wheel looks like it means business!
Yep, that’s a fat all-terrain tyre at the front. The wider tread means it spreads the load more evenly over soft ground, so you won’t sink into the mud. On firmer ground it will offer a bit more rolling resistance, but if your venue’s full of loose, uneven paths then it’s a price worth paying.
It’s not quite at the front of the barrow, though?
That’s right, well spotted! Prologic have intentionally brought the wheel slightly inboard to allow for the heaviest items (such as a carryall) to be loaded at the front, right over that wheel for better weight distribution. It really improves the balancing point and that front axle rolls smoothly thanks to a pair of sealed bearings.
Anything else I need to know?
The handles are height adjustable and the rear legs are secured in place with a locking pin so they won’t collapse. They also feature pivoting mud feet.
