There seems to have been a collective rethink on the world of rod pods in carp fishing over the last five years or so, thanks to some stylish new designs. Away from the classic high-price options, rickety pylon-like pods were once scoffed at, but not anymore. They’ve become lower to the ground, more compact, more stylish and more affordable—just like these new ones from Sonik…

1. Range
Building on the successful Xtractor range of rods and accessories, Sonik have launched two Xtractor pods—a two-rod and a three-rod version—plus a pair of neat tripods that also accommodate either two or three rods. All of them are dressed in a quality black anodised finish.

2. Lightweight
The Xtractor range of rod supports is constructed from aluminium to save weight without sacrificing strength. All in, the two-rod version weighs just 1kg (2.2lb), while its slightly bigger brother is only 1.15kg (2.5lb). The tripods, which can be used as a single rod support at the alarm end, weigh just 325g and 415g respectively, making them the perfect companion to hold for your lightweight rods and reels.

3. Stable
The key question posed when searching for a rod pod is ‘is it stable?’. Thankfully, thanks to a low-slung design and two-stage adjustable legs at each corner, the Xtractors pass that test with flying colours. Those squat legs and low central bar really help keep the pods in place. The tripods can be dug into soft ground for extra stability and also offer a quick rod-support solution in urban areas or on hard ground.

4. Adjustable
Each upright bar on these pods is height adjustable using a strong cam-lock clasp, so if you want to fish individual rods at different heights, you can (or simply attach buzzer bars for a level look). The central bar is also adjustable for length, with a stage-stand setup. Pozi-lock alignment collars complete the package.

5. Extras
Each pod is supplied with its own padded carry case, which is very useful for keeping them safe and sound during transport. If you wish to travel a bit lighter, or fish shorter roaming sessions then the tripod—with its three adjustable legs and angle adjustment capability—is well worth a look. They are nicely priced too: £109.99 for the three-rod pod & £99.99 for the two-rod version, whilst the tripods are £39.99 & £44.99.
