Rod Hutchinson Ballistic B & KMG Boilies

The Rod Hutchinson brand has to be up there as one of the most iconic. And for 2018, Rod has a new range of tackle items and a couple of ace new baits…

Rod Hutchinson is, granted, very good when it comes to creating carp baits. He pioneered carp foods in the 70s and flavours in the 80s. Chocolate Malt – recognise it? Monster Crab – got shouted at by the missus for stinking the house out? Secret Agent – remember it taking waters apart in the early 00s? All of those were developed and marketed by Rod. So yeah, we’ve got a lot to thank him for! And whilst Rod clearly has a nose for a decent flavour, he’s pretty damn sharp when it comes to combining it with a base mix and the result are these two new baits: KMG and Ballistic B.

The Big Questions

What’s so special about these two?
As is the case with all his baits, when developing these two, Rod’s main focus, aside from using only the finest ingredients and just fresh eggs, was to find a critical balance of flours and liquids to obtain a boilie that can be compared to a natural food source; a bait the fish would readily accept from the off and would greatly benefit from eating. So not only are they effective in the short session, but they keep working long-term.

What’s the difference between them?
We’ll start with Ballistic B. Based on Rod’s original Secret Seed Mix, the baits have a lovely open texture and this gives them incredibly high leakage. When it comes to the liquid flavours, these are from the brand’s ‘Legend’ collection – that’s basically Rod’s brain in a bottle - and the smell is nothing short of sensational: creamy and fruity all rolled into a 15 or 20mm ball. The KMG is at the other end of the spectrum, both in terms of flavour and colour, being a dark brown. It’s a true fishmeal bait, with high levels of krill in both powder and liquid form, along with belachan, salmon oil and a blend of fishmeals.

Is there a complete package of back-up products?
Of course. Along with the two sizes of boilies, they are sold in 1 and 5kg bags, plus there’s matching pop-ups, Hookbait Dip and Liquid Carp Food. These, combined with the boilies, gives you a very good all-round package.

How good is good?
We could wax lyrical about how brilliant these baits are for the next 10 pages. But we won’t. Instead we’ll just leave you with the knowledge that these two baits has been put together with 30+ years of around-the-world-big-fish captures, and to be honest, it doesn’t just get much better than that.
