The easiest D-rig system ever
Love using D-Rig presentations but hate tying them up? Want convenience but with zero compromise on quality? Then say hello to the BBS collection from the world’s oldest hook makers, Mustad
Mustad are very good at everyday hooks, something it’s proven over and over again as a purveyor of barbed or barbless wide gapes, curve shanks, long shanks and sometimes something a tad more adventurous, such as their circle hooks. And certainly no one can question their credentials – they’ve been in hook production since the 1870s. But what we do have to question is their collection of dedicated carp hooks. It’s certainly not been on our radar, and we’re guessing it’s not been on yours.
But thankfully that’s all set to change. Mustad have finally taken a serious look at the UK carp market and the result is something we’ll all benefit from. Need proof? Take a look at the new BBS UltraPoint hook collection, Mustad’s answer to a D-Rig convenience in a packet.

So what’s so good about them? Those clever people in Norway have created five hook patterns, in both barbed and barbless, in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, and each one comes with a laser welded pre-made D-Rig loop on the back of the hook. This means super easy-to-use convenience with zero need for sliding knots, and gives you perfect presentation each time.
And then there’s the hook themselves. The UltraPoint 4.8 has a narrower point that a regular 4.3 (their previous models), giving a slimmer hook point which results in optimal hook setting and penetration. And we don’t say this lightly, but these are, unquestionably, the sharpest hooks to land on our Review Desk in 2015 – even in the big size 4’s. They’ve also made the BBS’s pretty darn tough too, thanks to being dipped in Mustad’s new matt grey TitanX none-flashy finish, which not only increases strength but also gives the hook an ultra smooth coating to help with penetration.
When it comes to hook heritage, it doesn’t get any better than Mustad’s: they’ve been producing hooks since the 1870s
Powerful enough to cope with any angling situation; sharp enough to spook enough the cutest of carp into bolting; and convenient enough to impress enough the oldest of old school angler, and this is why they easily deserve the title of CARPology’s Hook Collection of the Year.
