Wychwood FLTR Floater Rod

Wychwood have crafted a mighty fine surface tool

Surface fishing can be done with any old rod, but having a purpose-built tool makes the whole experience much easier and much more pleasurable. With the FLTR - pronounced ‘floater’ - Wychwood have created just such a weapon. These rods (there are two in the range) are made for those long summer days chasing carp off the top. With our polarising shades and bucket hat on, we take a closer look…

The Big Questions

What’s the deal with these rods?
They’re out-and-out floater rods, for getting the most out of your surface sessions. They are lightweight and beautifully balanced, with a through action for maximum enjoyment and cushioning of light hooklinks. The custom-spaced braid-friendly guides complement the action and allow you to cast far enough when needed.

How many rods are in the range?
There are two: a 10-footer, which is ideal for small waters and restricted swims, and a more conventional 12-footer. Both have 2.25lb test curves, which is all you need for this type of work.

Do they both look the same?
Apart from the length difference, they both have a beautiful traditional aesthetic look. The cork handles are lovely to hold and the carbon is very nicely detailed with green whipping. They look far more expensive than their measly sub-£50 price tag. The hook keeper ring near the real collar is also a very welcome addition, allowing you to keep surface rigs safe and close to hand as you stalk your way around the lake.

Sounds like quite a package
If you’ve never treated yourself to a dedicated surface rod, then the FLTR is the ideal candidate for your first one. At £49.99 each they represent cracking value and will provide plenty of smiles when you hook a carp off the top.
