Rod Hutchinson Dream Maker Rods

Rebirth of a legend

It seems fitting that we’re looking at a set of rods bearing the Hutchinson moniker in this issue, of all issues.

His original Dream Maker rods were a sumptuous marriage of slick looks and top performance, and are still highly sought-after, old-school carbons. The latest Dream Makers, it seems, are set to carry that legacy into a new era. They’re classic-looking specimens, with understated aesthetics, built around a stunning, 40-tonne, 1k Japanese blank.

We love the nod to the old-school, in the shape of the abbreviated Duplon handles (the originals were built like this), and the minimal cool of the gunsmoke Fuji DPS-18 reel seat. The rings are the tough-as-old-boots, three-leg Zirconium Oxide type, and their black whippings carry subtle green detailing. We love the fact that there aren’t loads of models in this range, which comprises a 10ft 3lb, 12ft 2.75lb, 12ft 3lb, 12ft 3.5lb, 13ft 3lb, 13ft 3.5lb XT and matching spod and marker rods. The 2.75lb version has a lovely through action that we’re sure Rod would appreciate, and as you move up through the range, the action becomes ‘faster’ but no less lovely!
