SONIK Xtractor Rods

Sonik have entered the short-rod battleground with a comprehensive range that’s bound to turn heads

They said it was just a fad, that it would never catch on. How wrong they were. Short rods, specifically those with a telescopic element, are here to stay. More and more anglers are realising the weight-saving benefits they offer, and Sonik have responded in typical fashion by bringing out a hugely impressive range that won’t empty your wallet.

The Big Questions

These aren’t the first semi-telescopic carp rods, are they?
No, but Sonik have bided their time, assessed anglers’ needs and come out all guns blazing. They might not be the first in this sector but the Xtractors are certainly the first to look this good at this price.

So they’re suspiciously cheap?
Cheap is a relative term, but these real do seem to punch above their weight. Prices range from £59.99 to £69.99, but they look much more expensive. The blanks are slim, the fittings are classy and there are essential touches like anti-frap tip rings, super-light guides, Japanese shrink wrap handles, laser-etched butt caps and DPS reel seats.

What about the basics?
There are five rods in the range. One 6ft model (3lb TC), two nine-footers with test curves of either 2.75lb or 3lb, and a pair of 10-footers with 3.25lb and 3.5lb test curves. All four have a retractable butt section, so they collapse into that industry-standard 44-inches length. That’s 113cm in new money and perfect for fitting in your boot for opportunist sessions.

Any accessories?
Sonik’s very highly regarded SK-Tek luggage range has been expanded to include 9ft and 10ft sleeves specifically for the Xtractor range. These come in at £22.99 and £24.99 respectively.
