Spods or Spomb? Which is best?
Our subsurface angling specialist Rob Hughes investigates whether spods or Spombs are better...
Are you a spod or a Spomb man? If you’ll pardon me saying, it’s a bit like asking a bloke does he like bums or boobs. They’re both as good as each other in different ways! Spods and Spombs do a very different job to each other and it really does depend on what you are trying to achieve as to which is the best tool for the job. Before you start saying one or the other is useless, lets have a look at their uses.
The discharge rate of a Spomb is significantly quicker than a spod and Spombs are very good at releasing bait in clumps, particularly with heavier baits like boilies or bigger pellets. One off clumps in particular are impressive with a Spomb and a few clumps dotted around with a PVA bag in amongst them can be a great method. However, for a wider spread of bait – i.e. a larger carpet or a cloud in the water, then the spod is a better option. The holes in the side of the spod mean that water can flush through them and spread the mix out a little more. Beware what you put into a spod though, as some spods don’t have holes all the way down them and as a result a vacuum is created inside the spod and light baits will not fall out until the spod has moved. Surface drift has a massive effect on bait spread, so if you are spodding, bear in mind the spod will drift before it discharges thus spreading your baits out more. The main thing when deciding what to use, is to think what you want to achieve and use the right tool for the job.
