Spotted Fin hooklink materials

Spotted Fin made sure they covered all the bases with this new collection of hooklink materials: the finish, the braid, the coating, the stiffness, the workability – all nailed!

A coated hooklink is a coated hooklink, right? No, not right. Look beyond the actual concept of a material that you strip back to create an easy to tie combi rig and you’ll start to see a few differences. The finish, the inner braid, the colour, the stiffness, the workability of the product – all things that make or break a hooklink. Spotted Fin’s new Finskin range ticks all the right boxes when it comes having the perfect hooklink, as we found out…

Spotted Fin – I thought they just did awesome bait?
No, they also do an awesome range of terminal tackle, and just like the bait, it’s not off-the-shelf tat, it’s all bespoke, well thought out, and this hooklink collection, Finskin, is really delightful.

Come on! I’ve heard that like, a million times. Does it really differ that much to everyone else’s?
It really is lovely to tie with. Constructed from Dyneema, which is extremely tightly woven and as a result it gives this material a very high abrasion property. Around the outside of this is the new SF-matt outer coating which allows it to sink with ease and be stripped to create hinged rigs of all descriptions. Couple these two together and the result is a hooklink that will keep a low profile in the water and remain virtually undetectable.

But what does it knot like?
As all regular coated hooklink users will know, most materials’ Achilles heel is the coating splitting when you ‘bed’ a knot down. With Finskin that doesn’t happen. Use a Grinner, Palomar, Figure-Of-Eight or Knotless Knot and you’ll never have an issue. And talking of the coating, not only does it strip and break really nicely, it straightens out lovely when held over steam.

Are there many versions of it?
There’s two stiffnesses: Soft and Semi Stiff; both come in three breaking strains: 15, 25 and 35lb; and there’s three colours: Silt (it’s amazing), Weed and Gravel. We’re particularly digging the Semi Stiff version which is perfect for making booms (Hinged Stiff Link) or Pecky’s straight-through semi-stiff bottom bait presentation. And here’s a true fact when it comes to their breaking strains: Spotted Fin’s 25 and 35lb versions are as thin as their nearest competitor’s 20 and 30lb offering.

Do I really need another coated hooklink?
You do need one of these. Easy to strip? Tick. Will it split? No. Fast sinking? Tick. Mute matt camo coating? Yes. And at £14.00 for a 20m spool, it’s very competitively priced too and will do a better job than what’s currently hiding in your tackle box. spottedfin.com
