The benefit of using double bottom baits

Want to improve your hook holds and get more takes? Then double bottom baits are for you!

It’s a proven fact that a fish manages to eject our hookbaits many times before they finally get hooked and a take is registered. There are many alterations we can make to our rigs to maximise the chance of a hooked fish quicker by adding terminal items such as shrink tubing, silicon and rig rings to the presentation.

Another element that anglers look to is the type of bait used on the Hair to increase the chances of the fish getting hooked first time and one such approach is to us a double bottom bait. It seems to be a huge trend currently to fish with critically-balanced baits, but going in the opposite direction and actually adding weight to your hookbait and rig can pay dividends.

Another vital part to using a double hookbait is to match your rig to the size of your baits. It’s no good fishing a size 12 hook with two 18mm boilies.

So give this often forgotten tactic a go and see how you get on.

Never used

Double bottom baits are rarely used in modern angling and this means the fish are not used to ejecting them like they are with single hookbaits. This, coupled with the fact they find it problematic to eject them in the first place, creates an awesome presentation with little chance of them ejecting the rig.

Anti-ejection

The two baits mounted on top of each other means you require a much longer Hair and once in the fish’s mouth they find it a lot harder to deal with and if they are unable to eject the set-up, they’re hooked!

Ideal rig

As we mentioned, it is very important to match the rig and the components to the size of the baits you are using to get the maximum hooking potential of the presentation. One rig that is awesome for use with double bottom baits is the Claw Rig (featured here). Utilising a piece of shrink tubing and silicon pushed around the shank, it comes into its own with straight, unbalanced bottom baits. We recommend at least a size 6 hook with double baits of 15mm or above so that it can take hold in the fish’s mouth easier than a smaller hook. This will cause them a real problem!
