The Difference It Made Is Incredible

Something that is most definitely worth having a go with this winter is my hot mix. During my time on Dinton Pastures, I had great success after pouring boiling water over trout pellets. This kick-started their reaction in the water as they then released their inner oils. Anyone who’s used trout pellets in the winter months will know that the cold water almost seals them. They go white and don’t really break down, so no attraction comes off them whatsoever. However, by pouring that boiling water over them before you put them out, you’ve already melted the first couple of millimetres of the surface. The powders will start to break down, and once they’re in the pond, they’ll work like they do in the summer.
I then took the method a stage further whilst fishing at Mayfields. First, I smashed up some casters in a bait tub, and these were followed by some maggots. I then added tiny Dynamite Baits Marine Halibut Pellets before pouring in some boiling water. This worked a treat, and it soon became obvious that it was a method and a mix that could kick-start the swim. Instead of having to wait until set feeding times, the mix got the fish going instantly. To really up its pulling power, include chopped and liquidised worm, along with a bit of breadcrumb.
1. Start off by putting some casters into a plastic tub.
2. Using a Kompressa or similar, crush the casters.
3. You’ll be left with crushed shells and a lovely milky solution.
4. Now add a small handful of your chosen mini pellets.
5. Follow that with another handful of maggots this time.
6. Get your Kompressa and give the mix a good smash.
7. Take a lump of your Roquefort cheese and add it to the mix.
8. This is the time to add your boiling water to the concoction.
9. Once again, give the mix another good stir with your Kompressa.
10. Now put the lid on and leave it for five minutes before introducing.
