The Gamma Rig
Gaz Fareham's alternative 'go-to' pop-up presentation...
“My other ‘go-to’ pop-up presentation is what Scotty Karabowicz coined the Gamma Rig, due to the name of the fluorocarbon boom I used to use it with. It is essentially an ultra neat way to fish a highly flexible, very low pop-up that also incorporates all the benefits of using a stiff boom section - i.e. if balanced correctly it pushes the hookbait out and away from the lead, re-sets itself if disturbed and also provides the hooking potential and ejection difficulties that any rig with a stiff boom section offers.
“Initially I started using it as I wanted a rig that would allow me to fish small 10-12mm pop-ups neatly and effectively on a small hook, but with the same properties as it’s bigger brother, the Stiff Hinge. It was an adaptation from a combi-link I had seen Shaun Harrison using, with the addition of Benny Hamilton’s ultra neat Hook Ring Swivel attachment method - the trick is learning how to tie the braid section super short to keep the pop-up to virtually just the height of the hook. Like the Cobra, this can easily be tweaked and the components up or down sized to suit the situation and is an incredibly efficient pop-up presentation, giving ultra reliable, secure hook holds and offers everything that something like the Ronnie does, but in what I feel is a far neater, less bulky, clumsy way.”
