The two-rod trick
Precise bait placement catches more fish!
When fishing up to marginal features there is a common equation that normally comes into play – the tighter you get your hookbait the more fish you will catch. This generally involves using the line clip on the reel to make a controlled ‘clipped-up’ cast. But - if you have walking access to the far margin there is another ‘less hairier’ way that’s mega precise! Its known as the ‘two-rod’ trick and here’ how its done…
1 From the bank you’re planning on placing your bait – cast your marker float back towards your swim and pop-up the float.
2 Return to your swim and cast one of your fishing rods over the line of the marker float using a bare lead without your rig.
3 Place this fishing rod on the buzzer (turned-off) and open the bail arm of the reel so that line can be pulled from the spool.
4 Now go back to the far bank and gently wind in the marker float and the bare lead you’ve just cast over the marker rod line.
5 With the end of the fishing line and terminal gear now to hand you can attach your rig ready for the next step of the process.
6 Take your marker rod again (that should still be to hand) and tie a small loop of PVA tape to the tip eye like this.
7 Carefully nick the hook of your rig through the loop of PVA tape – and then hold the line and the marker rod apart like so.
8 Lower the tip of the marker rod into the water next - the PVA will melt and drop your rig precisely onto the spot – perfect!
