WHAT WE WERE DOING 20 YEARS AGO | PART 2

A look back at all the funny, odd, brilliant and embarrassing moments from the last 20 year

THE ODDEST LOOKING BIVVY
Nash has launched some bonafide stunners over the years: the Titan, the Titan Brolly, the Hide—but there have been one or two questionable ones too, such as the Globetrotter, which was part of their 2011 range. It looked like a Siamese pram hood.

THE HOLIDAY DESTINATION
In recent years it’s been all about Thailand, but rewind a decade, and Canada saw thousands of Brits flying over each spring and summer to experience fishing like no other. In fact, we managed to blag two trips back in 2009 and 2010!

CLASSIC DAVE LANE QUOTE
“…If I had my way in carp fishing I’d impose a spot fine for all unreasonable bailiffs and ban Realtree camouflage from pubs, bars, shows and anywhere not surrounded by trees.”

THE RIG WE ALL FORGOT ABOUT (UNTIL NOW)
Back in 2009, the Shot On The Hook Rig was super popular. Lots of step-by-step guides in all eight carp mags (yes, there were eight around at the time!) and plenty of catch reports in Carp-Talk. 15 years later and literally no one mentioned its name... until Korda released their latest Underwater film!

HOOKED ON FOODS LTD
Hands up, who remembers those Hooked On Foods girls?

RESTING THE SWIM
The buzz phrase of the late aughts! How many people actually did, we’re unsure.

You sent us your most gruesome fishing-related accidents (think: hooks in fingers, baiting needles in bums, huge blisters on ankles from boiling water), and we printed them!

THE START OF THE STICKER TREND?
In our last issue for 2013, we promoted that we had some new CARPology stickers; they would either go out with all merch orders, or if you just wanted a couple, then you needed to ‘send an SAE to the usual address’. It was very Blue Peter, 1999.

OUR FIRST REVIEW OF THE SPOMB
‘A new concept in spod design that really works. Hit the large red button at the front to open, pour in your spod mix and close. Cast and instantly add 10yds onto your best spod-launched-cast thanks to its incredible aerodynamics before the impact opens the doors and the bait falls through the water. Better still, it reels in ridiculously easily.’ Little did we know that 14 years later, there’d be three versions, it would become the world’s largest-selling bait delivery device, and Fox would purchase the company!
