Why do some anglers catch the big ones a lot quicker?

We ask big fish legend Terry Hearn if he has any theories...

Question

Joe Morgan asked: Have you guys got any other theories as to why some people catch the big ones a lot quicker than others?

I

’ve already written down ideas and thoughts on this one a while back. Obviously there are times when it’s intentional and largely down to tunnel vision, but a lot of the time it’s not like that at all. Not in-tune with the bulk? So what, neither is the big ‘un. Using crude rigs? So what, they’re less crude to the big ‘un. Still using boilies whilst the better anglers realised long ago they can catch ten times as many on something else? So what, the big ‘un still loves a boilie. You get where I’m going. Very often the way to catch the bulk isn’t necessarily the best way to catch the number one prize, that I can promise you.
I can’t remember half of what I wrote on this subject last time around, and I don’t want to go over it all again anyway. What I do remember is that sometimes you’ve just got to keep your head together, don’t drift too far from logic. In the case of Wasing, where I’d caught over 170 carp yet still hadn’t caught The Parrot, I could have very easily lost my head and blamed my bait and rigs, or even the shape of its mouth, but logic told me different; logic told me that there wasn’t anything wrong with what I was doing and that I’d most likely just been unlucky and dropped it once or twice. Instead of playing about I stuck to my guns and caught it with my very next bite.
