Why fishing more venues can help make you a better angler

I’ve been involved in the angling industry for nearly ten years now and as a result I’ve been lucky enough to fish a large number of waters up and down the UK and Europe. I began my career with Total Carp magazine and this enabled me to fish with some top anglers from both the north and south of the country. Each of these guys had their own skill sets and I learnt so much from them. I was lucky enough to fish many venues too because more often than not, I would get to ‘pub-chuck’ a couple of rods for the night whilst shooting a feature or film.

Consequently, I quickly learnt how to adapt to different waters and change my tactics to suit. Carp definitely have habits that change from water-to-water and by learning from so many experiences certainly makes you a better angler. It might be that those carp seem to have a habit of feeding on smaller baits such as particles or mini boilies, while on other waters a direct boilie approach could be the one.

The more fishing you do on an array of waters certainly gives you an insight and makes you adapt quicker. The more tricks in your armoury the better. I guess what I’m getting at is that I’m no one trick pony. If I need to spod at distance with particles, I will. If I need to creep around the edge lowering in a single grain of corn, I will. I think that the more experience in fishing, the more adaptable you become.”
