Wychwood Extricator Evolution

Wychwood have boosted their range of short rods, here’s how they differ from the original MLT versions…

It’s probably about time we stopped referring to the ‘current trend for shorter rods’ and just accepted—quite rightly—that they are not a passing fad and now form a key part of the rod market. Wychwood certainly seem to think so as they have significantly enlarged their Extricator range with the creation of the more upmarket ‘Plus’ models. Let’s see what sets them apart from the original MLT versions.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

1. New vs Old
It’s unfair to call the Extricator MLT rods ‘old’ as they’ve only been in existence for a couple of years, but the Plus models represent a big update. Roughly twice the price of the MLTs across the board they are, as Wychwood put it, ‘an upgraded option with all the bells and whistles’.

2. Plus blank benefits
So, the Plus rods offer a premium short rod, but what sets them apart? In the blank it’s all about the use of high-grade 40-ton carbon constructed with multi-layer technology and a mix of 3k and 1k carbon finishes.

3. Style and substance
The original MLTs were designed as shorter rods perfect for stalking opportunities, as evident in the ringing pattern and the shorter handles. For the Plus range, Wychwood have created all-round rods with fewer rings and longer handles, meaning they can be used
in a more traditional carping sense at ranges of up to 100yds.

4. Unique handles
The original MLT rods were all given cork handles, but with the new Plus models you have a choice. There’s quality cork on offer or you can opt for a new and unique polyurethane handle with subtle branding which gives a ‘custom’ feel to these rods. They’re unusual but we like them.

5. How short?
The new Plus range features 9ft and 10ft models designed for a multitude of uses, from canals to lakes. The MLTs remain a great option for stalking and offer a 6ft version for getting into the smallest of holes or for keeping in the back of your car.

Extricator 5000FD Reel
If you’re searching for the ideal reel to match the new or existing Extricator rods then this silver-and-black beauty should fit the bill. It’s a compact reel with a large spool, giving you plenty of capacity and great line lay without the weight and bulk of a traditional big-pit churner. It’s got a lightweight magnesium body and a drag that goes from locked up to free running in one complete turn of the front-mounted knob. £84.99
